Voter Registration Deadlines For 2017 Special Election

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS A VOTE-BY-MAIL ELECTION?

A vote-by-mail election is simply that: you vote by mail!  There are no traditional polling places.  Instead, your ballot will come to you by first class mail.  Your official election ballot will be mailed to you between October 11 and October 18, 2017.  All you need to do is fill out your ballot, place the ballot in the envelope provided, sign the postage-paid envelope, and mail it to the Navajo County Recorder’s Office.  It’s that simple!

You may also deposit your voted ballot at the Town Clerk’s Office, located in the Town Municipal Building at 958 S. Woodland Road, Lakeside, AZ  85929, or at the drive-up ballot box in front of the Navajo County Justice Court, 1360 N. Niels Hansen Lane, Lakeside, AZ  85929 (the old Town Hall, next to the Pinetop-Lakeside Police Department).

WHO CAN VOTE?

In order to vote in any Town election, you must be eighteen years of age or older, live within the incorporated Town limits, and be registered to vote at least 29 days prior to an election.  The last day to register for this year’s Special Election is October 9, 2017.

WILL THERE BE EARLY VOTING?

This is an all-mail election.  Ballots will be automatically mailed to you between October 11 and October 18, 2017.  (By law, this is the earliest date that ballots can be sent out – see Arizona Revised Statute § 16-558.01.)  After you receive your ballot, you may mail it to the County Recorder’s Office at any time during the voting period, or drop it off at one of the drop box locations.  Remember that all ballots must be received by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 (Election Day).

If you plan to be out of town during the voting period, you may request that your ballot be mailed to a different address (for this election only) by contacting the Navajo County Recorder’s Office by mail at P.O. Box 668, Holbrook, Arizona  86025, or by phone at either 928-524-4192 or 1-800-668-3867 (option 1) prior to 5:00 p.m. on October 27, 2017.  Your voted early ballot can be returned to the Town Clerk’s Office between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., the Navajo County Recorder’s Office between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., or to the drive-up drop box located at Navajo County Justice Court, 1360 N. Niels Hansen Lane, Lakeside, AZ  85929.

There will be one early voting site at the Navajo County Recorder’s Office. You can vote a paper ballot or use the Accessible Voting Device (Express Vote Machine).  If you need assistance, please call the Navajo County Recorder’s Office at (928) 524-4192 or 1-800-668-3867, option 1.

I’VE RECEIVED MY BALLOT. NOW WHAT DO I DO?

Once you have received your ballot, read the instructions carefully.  Fill out your ballot in BLACK ink pen.  Then, place your voted ballot in the return envelope, sign the envelope, and drop it in the mail. The return envelope is self-addressed, and the return postage has been pre-paid for you. If you do not want to mail your ballot, you can drop it off at the Town Clerk’s Office located at the Town Municipal Building, 958 S. Woodland Road, Lakeside, AZ  85929, or at the drive-up ballot box located at Navajo County Justice Court, 1360 N. Niels Hansen Lane, Lakeside, AZ  85929.  Ballots can also be delivered to the Navajo County Recorder’s Office at 100 East Code Talkers Drive, South Highway 77, Holbrook, AZ  86025.

All ballots must be returned to a drop box location by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 (Election Day) in order to be counted.  The Navajo County Recorder’s Office and Town Municipal Building will be open until 7:00 p.m. on Election Day to receive your ballot.

I LOST MY BALLOT. WHAT DO I DO?

If you lose your ballot, go to the Town Municipal Building, 958 S. Woodland Road, Lakeside, AZ  85929, and a replacement ballot will be issued to you.  Remember that all ballots must be received by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 (Election Day).

I MADE A MISTAKE ON MY BALLOT. WHAT DO I DO?

If you make a mistake on the ballot, take your spoiled ballot to the Town Municipal Building, 958 S. Woodland Road, Lakeside, AZ  85929, and a replacement ballot will be issued to you.  Remember that all ballots must be received by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 (Election Day).

I NEVER RECEIVED MY BALLOT. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

If you did not receive a ballot, your voter registration information may need to be updated.  Contact the Navajo County Recorder’s Office by phone at (928) 524-4192, or 1-800-668-3867 (option 1), or in person at 100 East Code Talkers Drive, South Highway 77, Holbrook, AZ  86025.  You can also go to the Town Clerk’s Office located at the Town Municipal Building, 958 S. Woodland Road, Lakeside, AZ  85929, and vote a provisional ballot (provisional ballots are only counted once your eligibility to vote has been verified by the county recorder).  Remember that all ballots must be received by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 (Election Day).

IF I MOVE TO A DIFFERENT RESIDENCE ADDRESS, WILL VOTING MATERIAL BE FORWARDED TO ME?

No.  Voting materials cannot be forwarded to a different address from that listed on your voter registration, so it’s very important for the Navajo County Recorder’s Office to have your current information on file.  If you change your name or your residential address, you must re-register to vote by October 9, 2017.  To determine whether or not your registration is current, please contact the Navajo County Recorder’s Office at (928) 524-4192 or 1-800-668-3867 (option 1), or check the Arizona Secretary of State’s voter registry at  https://voter.azsos.gov/VoterView/RegistrantSearch.do.

WHAT PRECAUTIONS ARE IN PLACE TO AVOID LOSING MY VOTED BALLOT IN THE MAIL?

Ballot return envelopes are coded with a special Postal Code so that postal officials know to handle them with extreme care and promptness.
